The no dig gardening method is the approach we take on our farm to ensure minimal weeding and high fertility levels for our vegetables. In this video I’ll show you a simple process on how to make a no dig garden bed:

1. The first step is to clear the entire area where you want to create your no dig garden beds.

Although not an absolute necessity, in this step it’s preferable you remove the root systems from any persistent perennial weeds (like brambles) and mow the entire area.

2. In the second step you’ll need to lay out the ‘frame’ of your no dig beds.

Once you’ve cleared out the area you want to use for the garden beds, it’s time to lay out the ‘frame’ to help visualize where they come. I like to use a small measure tape, some pegs and a little bit of twine for this purpose. See: 01:24.

3. In the third step it’s time to lay down the first layer of light depriving material.

After creating the visual reference of where your growing beds are coming, it’s time to lay down the first light depriving barrier directly on top of the weeds: cardboard. This cardboard layer is going to help killing the existing vegetation below it by depriving them from sunlight. Make sure to include enough overlap on the sheets of cardboard. This sheet mulching technique is a great way to help you create weed free garden beds pretty much instantly. See: 04:00.

4. In the fourth step it’s time to create your no dig garden beds and pathways.

Directly on top of the cardboard you can create your no dig garden beds by applying a layer of weed free compost. The minimum thickness of this compost layer should at least be 10 centimeters (4 inches), but preferably 15 centimeters (6 inches). After applying the compost you’ll need to tamp it down and compact it. You can do this by either walking on the beds, with the back of a shovel or in our case, since we run a commercial scale market garden, a bed roller. See: 07:34.

After creating the beds it’s time to create the pathways. In our case we use woodchips (we have a local free source), but you can also use a little bit of compost for the pathways to lightly cover it. Generally speaking: an area with lots of slug activity should use compost for the pathways. In regions with fewer slug activity you can use woodchips or similar raw organic material.

And just in case you were wondering about the widths of our no dig garden beds and pathways:
Beds: 75 centimeter (30 inch)
Pathways: 45 centimeter (18 inch)

That’s the simple, yet effective no dig gardening approach to turn your lawn (or a weedy patch) into a thriving and fertile vegetable garden instantly.

I need a tumbler for the current restoration project on the main channel. The parts are quite big, thats why the tumbler itself needs to be bigger. I found a 25 liter barrel in the hardware store and I built a complete rotary tumbler around it.

In this video im restoring an antique dented oiler.

My friend found this oiler in the steel waste at the recycling station. I really liked the unique design of it and I bought it from him for $5. It almost had no rust, but it was very dirty and had a lot of dents. The tricky part of this restoration was definitely the removing of all the dents in the can. I want to say thank you to my friend who helped me with this and to his boss, who allowed him to use the tools from his work place. Check out his website (www.huegli.swiss), they do car body repair in Zurich Switzerland. Im very happy how it turned out and I really like the new look of the oiler. Ill keep this oiler in my shop and Im going to use it from now on.

An antique wooden sled from the 1940s got my father when he was little. The sledge lay in the ground all the time. I came across them during the reconstruction of the land. The perfect project for a new video.

The rohačka sleigh, once an integral part of the inventory of every proper mountain cottage in the Giant Mountains or in their foothills before the invasion of motor vehicles, is today a historical curiosity of lively interest for both the local population, weekend cottages and guests of mountain resorts. Their forgotten last specimens are discovered with joy in the various «stalks» of the barns, where they escaped the orderly and liquidating attention of previous generations. The sent glory of wild rooster rides to us is heard not only from written records taken in the last century, but sometimes also occasionally from the mouths of witness narrators. After all, even after the Second World War, wood was approached in some parts of the mountains by them. It is generally said that this versatile and simple means of transport was already known and used by Gendorfs lumberjacks, which Mr. Kryštof brought from the Alps and settled in the Giant Mountains in the 16th century. Rohačky were used mainly in winter, but they often came to honor even in summer on steep slopes during haymaking.

The first written descent on a sledge took place in 1737 during the return from the expedition to the Little State. The report of the first purely tourist exit has been preserved from 1815. It was on a 7 km long route, leading from the border hut on the Przełęcz Okraj saddle (Grenzbaude) to the Pod Złotą Gwiazdą inn in Kowary. This attraction was constantly gaining new fans. In 1896, about 3,000 stag beetles and the same number of draft horses were prepared for tourists. An association of carriages was even formed, defending their interests and regulating fares on individual routes. Additional infrastructure has been developed, new border crossings and customs have been set up. Tourism became a mass affair, which was undoubtedly influenced by the commissioning of railway lines connecting the Giant Mountains with Berlin and Wrocław in 1866. Winter sleigh rides, similar to the summer ascent to Sněžka, were among the most popular tourist attractions in the Giant Mountains. Fares, depending on the length of the route, ranged from 5 to 16 marks and followed a fixed price list.

Josef Tylš, a forester from Červený vrch, came up with the idea of ​​resuming rides on old timber sleighs from Malá Úpa to Kowar, which were run here at the beginning of the 19th century to amuse the manor and increase the money of the highlanders. Under his leadership, in 1999, the editorial office became the organizer of the zero — trial congress from customs to Kowar. And the descents to Kowary are held regularly, the beginning is not in Pomezní Boudy, but about 3 km lower in the direction of Kowary. The goal is then in Jelenia Góra.

In January 2016, the first rohaček race was held directly in Malá Úpa.
